I have been privileged to attend not one but two parties this weekend that shared a common theme: celebration. In both events we were celebrating individuals one starting a new life through retirement and a friend who died a few years ago and would have been 60 this year.
What does that have to do with change and why do I feel compelled to talk about it here? Well I guess what I noticed when I finally got back home last night was just how happy and energised I felt; how celebrating work achievements or simply someone’s generated a feel good factor that rippled out and touched everyone. I had forgotten just how powerful celebration could be and how helpful it was to take the time to savour it.
When things change around us, when we feel unsure about the present let alone the future, we have a tendency to lose our self confidence. We focus so much on what we have not done, our failings, that we often barely notice the successes we have achieved.
I know we are all very busy, but taking a few minutes to discover and celebrate our successes may just be what the doctor ordered to give us hope, build our self esteem and motivate us to go forward.
And you know what they say: “success breeds success”
